That simple equipment swap is on Newcastle's permit list
A standby generator for the next windstorm, a furnace at the end of its life, a new air conditioner, a water heater that quit: each feels like a single purchase decision. Newcastle sees them differently. The City puts all four, backup generators, furnace replacement, AC installation, and water-heater replacement, on its list of common projects that require permits, and it warns that penalties apply for work done without a required permit. The equipment conversation goes better when that list is on the table from the start.
Priority Electric handles the electrical side of those swaps and the approvals question that rides along. Call (206) 718-3047 or request an estimate with whatever equipment details you already have.
Guidance: two offices can touch one appliance
Newcastle says its Building Division administers city permit activity while electrical permits and inspections are handled by Washington State Labor & Industries. So a generator project can hold a city building question and an L&I electrical question at the same time, and neither answers for the other. The practical move is to identify the work first, then confirm the applicable path for the property and scope before anything begins; Washington requires an electrical permit before electrical work begins, subject to the state's rules and exceptions.
Start from the equipment, not the category
Adding backup power? Describe what you want connected when the power fails, where the equipment would sit, and whether a broader remodel is in play; the planning page is transfer switches and backup power. Changing heating or cooling equipment? Include the equipment information, the planned location, and whether another trade has already opened walls or access routes. Replacing a water heater? Say whether it is electric and what changes at the installation. None of that fixes the scope from a web page, but it separates the electrical questions from building coordination cleanly.
Houses and shared buildings answer differently
Newcastle counted 6,009 housing units in 2026, up from 5,471, with 60% one-unit homes and 40% in buildings of two or more units. The number that matters in practice is the second one: in a townhome or condominium, the decision-maker, the access plan, and the building contacts can all differ from a detached house, so start a shared-building request with the unit or common-area context and any association requirements. For a detached home, planned equipment and safely visible panel information do most of the work. The statistics themselves diagnose nothing about your home, and we do not use them that way.
The request that gets a real answer
Send the equipment type, property type, address, timing, and whether a City permit discussion is already underway. Photos help when safe to take; never remove covers or test equipment to create them. Our practice is to discuss the work, provide a written scope with its own number, and call before adding anything outside it.
Move fast only for the right reasons
Smoke, fire, sparks, a burning odor, a shock, or exposed energized equipment: get to safety and call 911. A wider outage goes to the electric utility. Neither waits for an online request, and neither is solved by resetting a breaker again.
Put the equipment on the table
Name the machine, the building, and the timing through Request an Estimate, or call (206) 718-3047. We will sort which office signs off on what.

Common questions
Does Newcastle require a permit for a backup generator?
Newcastle lists back-up generators among common projects that require permits. The City’s list does not replace a project-specific confirmation of the building and electrical path. Newcastle guidance
Who handles Newcastle electrical permits?
The City states that Washington State Labor & Industries handles electrical permits and inspections. City of Newcastle
Can electrical work be planned with a furnace or AC replacement?
Yes. Share the equipment information, location, timing, and any related remodel work so the circuit, routing, and permit discussion can be scoped with the larger project.
What should a condo owner include in the request?
Include the unit or common-area location, building contact, access limits, and the equipment or symptom involved. Do not assume a shared-building project follows the same process as a detached house.
What if I smell burning near electrical equipment?
Get to safety and call 911 if there is immediate danger. Do not touch damaged equipment, remove a cover, or continue testing it.

Denis did a great job installing a transfer switch. He was available for a follow up question. Wife is happy, we now have a backup power option. I would use priority electric again!

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
