Ready for the next outage
When the wind takes the power out, a transfer switch is the difference between flipping one lever and running extension cords through a window in the rain.
Around here the outage usually arrives with the November wind, and it decides its own length. The generator in the garage is only half a plan. Without a transfer switch, using it means cords snaking through the house to the fridge and the furnace fan, or worse, someone improvising a connection that backfeeds the grid and endangers the line crew working to restore your street.
What a transfer switch actually does
It is the legal, safe bridge between generator and house. The switch isolates your home from the utility before generator power touches your circuits, which protects both the crew on the pole and your generator when the grid snaps back. Your chosen circuits, and only those, come alive: furnace, fridge, well pump, some lights, the internet.
The installation, in order
- A conversation about what must stay on: heat, refrigeration, water, medical equipment, the office.
- Matching those loads to your generator's real output, so it carries what you chose without stalling.
- Mounting the switch at the panel and moving the selected circuits over to it.
- An inlet box outside, so the generator connects with one cord, outdoors, where it must run anyway.
- The permit, the inspection, and a hands-on walkthrough until you can do the changeover without notes.
A customer who used theirs
One reviewer on the reviews page wrote about the transfer switch we installed and about getting a follow-up question answered afterward, which matters more than it sounds: backup gear gets used months after installation, in the dark, by whoever is home. If you forget the sequence in February, call and we will talk you through it.
Before the storm, not during
The time to do this is a calm month. Storm weeks fill every electrician's calendar in all three counties at once, and an installation booked in the sunshine gets unhurried, careful attention. The backup power readiness guide walks through the choices, and the storm recovery guide covers what to check after an outage ends.
Buying backup power that works in the dark
Put these to anyone who bids
- Is the switch matched to my generator's continuous output, not the surge figure on the sticker?
- Which circuits move over, and who decides that list?
- Manual switch, interlock, or automatic standby: why that answer for my house?
- Are the outdoor inlet, the permit, and the inspection all inside this price?
When to end the conversation
Anyone who offers to rig the generator into a dryer outlet has told you everything you need to know; thank them and stop. Softer warnings: a bid produced without asking your generator's make and wattage, or an installation that ends with no walkthrough, leaving you to learn the changeover during your first outage.
Readiness between storms
Your generator's manual sets its own exercise and storage routine, and following it is most of the maintenance story. On the house side, keep the changeover steps written on paper at the switch, practice them once in daylight each autumn, and make sure everyone who might be home alone can run the sequence. When you gather numbers for the work itself, the estimate preparation guide and the one on comparing bids apply here as anywhere.
Tell us what needs to stay running at your place through Request an Estimate, or call (206) 718-3047. Include your generator's make and wattage if you already own one.
Common questions
Manual or automatic transfer switch?
A manual switch with a portable generator covers most homes at a fraction of a standby system's cost: you start the generator and throw the switch yourself. Automatic systems pair with permanently installed standby generators and change over on their own. We install both; the honest recommendation depends on your loads and budget.
Can I just plug my generator into a dryer outlet?
No. That is backfeeding: it can energize the utility line and injure the crew repairing it, and it bypasses every protection in your panel. It is illegal for good reason, and it is exactly what a transfer switch exists to prevent.
How big a generator do I need?
Size it to the short list of circuits you truly need, not the whole panel. A furnace fan, fridge, freezer, and lights fit a modest portable unit; add a well pump or heat pump and the arithmetic changes. We run those numbers with you before the switch is chosen, so the pieces match.
Does a transfer switch installation get inspected?
Yes. It is permitted electrical work in all three counties we serve, and the inspection is part of our scope and our number. Given what this equipment does when the grid is down, that oversight is worth having.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
