Priority Electric LLC — Powering what matters

Wiring your Fircrest ADU, attached or detached

You are adding a second living space in Fircrest, and the wiring questions are already stacking up: new circuits, fixture counts, maybe a panel question. Set those aside for the one decision that comes first: attached or detached. The City’s permit center publishes separate application material for each ADU type and also lists an ADU address-request form, so your answer shapes the paperwork from day one. Settle it early and every electrical decision after it gets easier to place.

We wire ADUs and the projects that come with them, and we can help you sort the electrical questions that follow the type decision. Request an Estimate and tell us which way you are leaning, or call (206) 718-3047. A preliminary layout if one exists, the rooms or equipment you intend, and whether an address request or City application has begun all make the first conversation more useful.

What each ADU type asks of the wiring

For an attached unit, the conversation usually starts where the new space connects to the existing home: which rooms are being created or changed, and what appliance or comfort equipment you have selected. For a detached unit, the structure location, its intended use, the proposed equipment, and what you know about the main residence and the planned connection carry more weight.

Neither list decides the work your project needs. It simply keeps a generic request from leaving the key decisions until late in the project, when they are harder to change.

The City also lists additions, remodels, accessory buildings, and a residential energy packet among its permit-center materials. If more than one of those categories is part of your overall project, tell us that too. Electrical planning works best when the changing pieces of a project are visible together.

Fircrest’s paperless permit center, in practice

Fircrest says its permit department is paperless and that required documents can be emailed. The same page warns that large files or spam filtering can interfere with email delivery, and says an upload link can be provided if needed. That is process context worth having, not a schedule promise, so plan around it accordingly.

Before you reach out, build a simple folder: preliminary plans, equipment notes, a room list, existing concerns, and any City forms or checklists already in use. We do not need every final decision to begin a scope conversation. Clear material just makes it easier to see what is still open.

If you are still choosing between attached and detached, make that the first line of your request. If the City address-request step is already complete, include the outcome where it helps the project discussion.

Confirming who inspects the wiring at your address

Tacoma Power names Fircrest in its service area. Take that as a reason to confirm the current electrical permit and inspection process for your exact address and the actual work, not as an approval or a utility decision. Permit and inspection requirements are tied to the specific job, and checking them is part of scoping it.

The electrical plan itself can cover lighting, receptacles, dedicated equipment needs, questions about the existing panel, and how the new living space relates to the rest of the property. Those are scope questions. We work through them with the applicable public process, the building plan, and the equipment information in view.

What we agree on goes into a written scope with its own number, and if the work develops beyond it, you get a call before anything is added. That suits an ADU, where details keep moving as plans develop. Confirm the process is still current when you request the estimate.

Decide the wiring before the finishes decide it

Electrical choices are easiest to weigh before walls, cabinetry, equipment locations, and fixtures have locked in the options. Use the estimate conversation to surface what deserves an answer now: desired lighting zones, appliance locations, exterior use, or equipment that may need its own circuit. Do not assume a capacity change from an ADU label alone.

If a person receives a shock, notices smoke or sparks, or believes there is immediate fire danger, stop work in the affected area and call 911. A utility outage affecting more than the property should be reported to the utility. The estimate channel is for planned work and non-emergency troubleshooting.

Bring us the version you have today

Tell us whether the unit is attached or detached, whether the City address step has started, and what the space is meant to contain. That is enough to start a concrete electrical conversation about your Fircrest project.

FAQs

Common questions

Why does attached versus detached matter at the first conversation?

Fircrest publishes distinct attached-ADU and detached-ADU application materials. Identifying the type helps organize the project questions before electrical scope is set.

Does Fircrest have an ADU address step?

The City’s permit center lists an ADU address-request form. Check directly with the City for the current requirements for your project.

Can I send a preliminary floor plan?

Yes. A preliminary plan, room list, or equipment notes can make the estimate conversation more useful. Sensitive personal information should be removed before sharing.

Who should confirm electrical permits for a Fircrest ADU?

The current electrical permit and inspection path should be checked for the address and scope. Tacoma Power’s service-area information is context, not a substitute for project-specific confirmation.

When should lighting and appliance locations be discussed?

Bring them up before finishes or equipment selections make the choices harder to change. The conversation can identify decisions that need to be made now and decisions that remain open.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
