Light the room you actually use
A dark kitchen counter, one overhead bulb doing all the work, fixtures from three owners ago. Lighting is the upgrade you notice every single evening.
You chop vegetables in your own shadow because the ceiling fixture is behind you. The living room has one switch that turns everything on or nothing. The hallway still has the frosted dome the builder picked in 1994. None of this is broken, exactly. It is just worse than it needs to be, every day, in the rooms you use most.
Lighting work we take on
- Recessed LED layouts, planned around counters, tables, and seating rather than a symmetric grid that ignores the furniture.
- Kitchen lighting: cans, under-cabinet strips, and pendants over the island, each on sensible switching.
- Fixture swaps, including heavy chandeliers and fans that need a properly rated box, not a prayer.
- Dimmers and controls matched to the lamps they drive, which is what stops LED flicker and buzz.
- Exterior and security lighting on the house, garage, and shop.
Try one light before you buy the ceiling
On one kitchen job, the owners were unsure how recessed cans would look against their old fixtures, so we installed a single can first as a test. They saw the real brightness and beam in their own room, then said yes to the rest of the ceiling. Their review tells that story on the reviews page. Where a trial run makes the decision easier, ask; it beats guessing off a box label.
The wiring behind the glow
New lighting is circuit work, not just fixture work. We check what the existing circuit already carries, cut ceiling openings cleanly, fish cable without wrecking drywall you will have to repaint, and put the switching where your hand expects it. Three-way switches that finally match the way you walk through the house are a small thing you end up appreciating daily.
If the lighting change rides along with a bigger project, plan them together: cabinets, ceilings, and paint decide when wire can move cheaply. Our recessed kitchen lighting guide covers layout in depth, and the remodel electrical page covers the coordination.
Picking a lighting bid, and a bidder
Worth asking whoever you invite over
- Are these housings rated for the insulation contact they will have above the ceiling?
- Will the dimmers be matched to these exact lamps, and tested before you leave?
- Is the box behind that fan or chandelier rated for its weight?
- Who patches and paints the openings your cable route needs?
Where lighting quotes go sideways
A price that arrives before anyone asks what is above your ceiling is a guess wearing a decimal point. So is a layout with no mention of switching, or a fixture allowance left unstated so the number quietly excludes the fixtures you would actually choose. In the rooms themselves, buzzing at a dimmer, flicker that survives a bulb change, or a browned trim ring are worth pointing out from the floor; none of them calls for a ladder or a screwdriver.
Treating the finished lighting well
Stay inside each fixture's labelled wattage, replace lamps on dimmed circuits in kind so the pairing keeps working, and note which switch runs what while the walkthrough is fresh. If flicker creeps in later, the flickering lights page sorts harmless from meaningful. Before gathering bids at all, the estimate preparation guide and the one on weighing estimates past the bottom line are short and worth the minutes.

Common questions
Why do my new LED bulbs flicker on the dimmer?
Most flicker on dimmed LEDs is an old incandescent-era dimmer driving lamps it was never designed for. Swapping to a compatible dimmer usually cures it. If lights flicker undimmed, that can be a connection problem instead; see flickering lights.
How many recessed lights does a room need?
Fewer than the grid-of-nine photos suggest, if they are aimed at the right places. We lay out around what the room does: counters and sink in a kitchen, seating and art in a living room. Beam angle and lumen output matter more than the raw count.
Can you add lights without tearing up the ceiling?
Usually. Remodel-style housings and careful cable fishing let most single-story and accessible ceilings take new cans with only the fixture openings cut. Where framing blocks the route, we tell you where a patch will be needed before we cut anything.
Is a permit required for lighting work?
Swapping a fixture on an existing box generally is not permitted work; adding circuits or new wiring generally is. It depends on scope and city, and we sort that out for the job as part of the estimate rather than leaving it vague.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
