Wire the remodel once
The walls will be open for a few weeks. Every electrical decision is cheap while they are and expensive after, so this is the moment to get the wiring right.
A remodel moves the sink, adds an island, turns a basement into a media room, and every one of those choices is secretly an electrical choice. Where the appliances land decides the circuits. Where you will stand decides the lighting. What the old room hid in its walls decides how much of the existing wiring can stay.
Where remodels grow their circuits
- Kitchens: small-appliance circuits, a dedicated line for the induction range or wall oven, disposal, dishwasher, and lighting in layers instead of one ceiling box.
- Bathrooms: a 20A circuit for the heated floor and the hair dryer era, fan timers, and GFCI protection throughout.
- Basements: egress-area outlets, media and office circuits, and lighting that stops the space feeling like storage.
- Whole-home projects: the chance to retire the most tired circuits in the house while access is free.
Code follows the remodel in
When a room is remodeled, the work in it must meet today's code even though the room was legal yesterday: AFCI protection, tamper-resistant receptacles, outlet spacing, the lot. That catches homeowners off guard mostly when nobody prices it in from the start. We do, and we will tell you which requirements your project actually triggers rather than gold-plating the list.
Working with your contractor or with you
On GC-run jobs we show up when the schedule says, pass rough-in inspection so cover-up is never waiting on us, and return for trim-out when finishes are in. On owner-run projects we help you sequence: what must happen before insulation, which decisions the cabinet order locks in, and when the inspector needs to see open walls. One remodel customer wrote that every option was explained until the choices made sense; that is how the coordination is supposed to feel.
Discoveries get a phone call
Open walls tell the truth. If demolition exposes wiring that should not be covered back up, you get a call with photos, options, and pricing while the wall is still open, and you decide. The written scope you approved stays the scope until you change it.
Buying the electrical inside a remodel
For your electrician, or your GC's
- Which of today's requirements does this project trigger, and are they priced in from the start?
- What decisions do you need from me, and by which week of the schedule?
- When does the rough-in inspection land, and what waits on it?
- How is the fixture allowance stated, and what happens when I choose differently?
Where remodel numbers hide trouble
An electrical line item inside a general bid with no scope behind it cannot be compared with anything; ask to see what it contains. An allowance nobody explains is a future change order wearing a friendly face. And a bid that skips the code items the remodel itself triggers is not lower, it is unfinished.
After the last coat of paint
Keep the spec sheets for what was installed, ask for the panel directory to be updated before the crew leaves, and take the switch walkthrough while someone can still answer questions. Then file the permit and inspection records with the remodel's paperwork; a future buyer's inspector will look for exactly those. On a project this layered, the estimate preparation checklist and the estimate comparison guide earn their reading time twice over.
Planning a kitchen? Start with the kitchen remodel electrical guide. For the bigger picture there is a whole-home remodel checklist. Then tell us about the project or call (206) 718-3047 while the design can still move.
Common questions
When in the remodel should the electrician get involved?
At design, before demolition. Appliance choices, island placement, and lighting layout all set the electrical scope, and moving a line on a drawing is free. Moving a finished wall is not.
Does my kitchen remodel really need new circuits?
Almost always some. Modern kitchen code requires more dedicated circuits than most older kitchens have, and induction ranges and wall ovens add real load. The count depends on your appliances; the estimate lists each circuit and why it is there.
Who pulls the electrical permit on a remodel?
We pull the electrical permit for our work and meet the rough-in and final inspections. If a GC holds the building permit, the electrical permit still rides under our license, which is how Washington expects it done.
Can I keep using the kitchen during the work?
Power interruptions in a remodel are short and scheduled: we tell you which circuits go down and when, and the rest of the house stays live. The longer outages in a kitchen project come from demolition and cabinets, not usually from the electrical.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
