Electrical work in DuPont, matched to the right code
Planning an addition, an ADU, a tenant improvement, or an EV charger in DuPont drops you into a slightly different code conversation depending on which one it is. A garage circuit at a house and new wiring in a commercial suite do not answer to the same rulebook, and neither does an addition versus a change inside space you already have. Sorting that out early is what keeps a straightforward wiring job from stalling behind a question nobody asked at the start. It is also work you can hand to us.
Start by telling us what the space is for and what you want it to do. Send the address and a short description through Request an Estimate, or call (206) 718-3047 and talk it through with the electrician who will actually do the work.
DuPont's code list, and where the electrical permit really lives
DuPont is unusually clear about its rulebook. The City publishes a codes-in-effect list naming the 2021 International Residential Code, the 2021 International Building Code, and both residential and commercial Washington State Energy Code references. DuPont's codes-in-effect page is worth reading before design decisions harden, because it frames the question we ask first: is this residential or commercial, new space or a change inside existing space.
Approvals then split into two separate tracks. The City's building division says it performs plan reviews, site visits, and inspections, with inspections scheduled through the online permit portal; DuPont Building Services describes that side of the process. Electrical permits are a different jurisdiction question entirely: DuPont is not named on Washington L&I's city list, which makes L&I the indicated authority for electrical permits and inspections. We check that list again for your address and scope before the project begins.
One track can matter without the other, and both can matter on a single project, but they are never interchangeable. The building side follows the overall construction; the electrical side follows the wiring. We name them separately in your paperwork, so a portal confirmation on one side is never mistaken for the sign-off on the other.
The details that sharpen a DuPont scope
For a residential addition or ADU, the useful details are the layout, the planned appliances, and any heating or cooling equipment you are leaning toward, even loosely. Weighing a charger instead, bring the intended charging equipment and where you park. For a small commercial or property-management job, add the intended use of the space, the planned equipment, the access hours, and the operating constraints.
It also helps to say what is still undecided. A project where the heat source is an open question needs different electrical headroom than one where every appliance is already picked, and a manager coordinating a unit or business space has decisions an owner-occupier never faces. We would rather carry a known unknown in writing than price around a guess. The clearer the category, the less likely later work gets treated as an unplanned add-on.
A nearly flat housing count, read correctly
On paper DuPont has barely changed: OFM's 2026 estimate lists 3,805 housing units against 3,791 in 2020, and 68% of the 2026 units are one-unit homes. Washington OFM housing data supports the nearly flat citywide count and the housing mix. In plain terms this is a mostly built-out, mostly single-family city, which is exactly the setting where additions, ADUs, garage circuits, and chargers come up.
What those figures cannot tell anyone is the age, capacity, or condition of the electrical system in your house, rental, or commercial space. They are background for planning, never a prediction about your property. The scope gets built from your actual equipment and your actual plans, not a citywide stereotype.
What the written estimate does for you
Once we have discussed the work, it goes into writing under a number of its own. If the job needs to grow past what that document describes, we call you before adding the item, every time. An estimate is not a code interpretation, a permit approval, or a promise of inspection timing; it is the point where the electrical work is described clearly enough for you to make the next decision.
That matters most when a plan is still moving: a residential project that may later add an EV charger, heat-pump circuit, or panel decision, or a commercial job with separate tenant and building-management questions. How estimates work walks through the process, and additions, ADUs, shops and garages covers that kind of project in more depth.
Danger first, paperwork second
If a condition involves visible arcing, smoke, fire, or immediate shock danger, leave the area when it is safe, do not handle the equipment, and call 911. A power interruption affecting a larger area belongs with the serving utility. For non-dangerous planning or repair questions, share the symptom or project facts without trying to test the circuit repeatedly.
Hand us the sorting
You bring the project; matching it to the right code context, the right City process, and the right L&I step is our job, not homework we leave with you. Request an Estimate with the use of the space and what you are adding or changing, or call (206) 718-3047 and start there.

Common questions
Which energy-code reference applies to a DuPont addition or ADU?
DuPont publishes both residential and commercial Washington State Energy Code references among its codes in effect. The project use and scope should be confirmed with the applicable authority rather than assumed from a general page. DuPont codes in effect
Does DuPont’s online permit portal issue electrical permits?
The City describes its building-process portal and inspection scheduling, but electrical permits and inspections are under L&I for DuPont addresses. Verify the project’s requirements before work begins. DuPont Building Services · L&I
What should a property manager bring to the electrical-scope discussion?
State the use of the space, whether the request is residential or commercial, the equipment involved, access constraints, and any construction plan already in hand.
Does a nearly unchanged citywide housing count mean my property has a certain electrical setup?
No. The housing count is only citywide context. Electrical decisions need to be based on the property, the planned equipment, and the confirmed scope.
When is an electrical issue a 911 situation?
Call 911 for immediate fire or shock danger. Do not touch damaged equipment, reset breakers, or continue trying to locate the source.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
