Something stopped working. We find why
A dead outlet, a breaker that will not hold, lights that dim when the dryer starts. Tell us what it is doing and we will trace it to the cause.
Electrical problems rarely announce themselves clearly. Half the kitchen goes dead while the other half works. A breaker trips every few days with no obvious pattern. The bathroom lights flicker only when it rains. You have reset things, unplugged things, and it keeps happening.
That is troubleshooting work, and it is a different job from installation. Installation follows a plan. Troubleshooting starts with a symptom and works backward through the circuit until the cause is in hand. It rewards patience and instruments, not parts-swapping.
How a troubleshooting visit runs
First we listen: what stopped working, when, and what changed around that time. A new appliance, a storm, recent remodel work, or nothing at all. Then we start at the panel and test outward, isolating sections of the circuit until the fault has nowhere left to hide.
Most faults turn out to be a failed splice, a backstabbed outlet that let go, a worn device, or a breaker doing its job on a genuinely overloaded circuit. When we find it, we show you. You see the scorched connector or the loose neutral before we repair it, so the fix never has to be taken on faith.
Repairs we complete in the same visit
- Failed outlets, switches, and dimmers, replaced and properly terminated.
- Loose or burned connections found in boxes and at the panel.
- Breakers that have failed, and GFCI or AFCI devices that will not reset.
- Fixtures and devices damaged by heat, moisture, or age.
If the trail leads to something larger, such as wiring that should be replaced rather than patched, we stop and talk before doing anything beyond the agreed work. You hear the finding, the options, and a number. Nothing gets added to the job without that call.
When it should not wait
A burning smell, a warm outlet or switch plate, scorch marks, or a breaker that trips the instant you reset it: leave the circuit off and call (206) 718-3047. If there is smoke or fire, call 911 first. Our warning signs guide covers what to stop using and why.
How to buy diagnosis work
Hiring troubleshooting is not like hiring an installation. You are paying for a search, and the questions below tell you quickly whether a bidder respects that.
Fair questions for anyone you call
- How do you charge for the diagnosis itself, and what happens if the fault refuses to show?
- Will you show me the failed part before repairing it?
- Do you carry common parts, so a found fault becomes a fixed fault in one trip?
- If the visit ends without an answer, what record of it do I keep?
Caution flags in this trade
A firm repair price given over the phone for a fault nobody has seen is a guess you will be held to. Parts swapped one after another without an explanation is another: that is spending your money to avoid thinking. And a repair that grows mid-visit without a call first should not happen anywhere.
Habits that shrink future faults
Much of what we trace began as a habit: a heavy portable load sharing a circuit with everything else, a reset repeated until something cooked, a first symptom ignored because it went away. Act on the first occurrence, give big plug-in loads their own outlets, and label breakers as you learn them so the story you tell on the phone is precise. The tripping breaker page shows how to read a trip pattern safely. When a visit turns into a repair estimate, preparing for an estimate and comparing estimates on substance cover the rest.
What to note before we arrive
Which rooms or outlets are affected, what was running when it failed, and whether a reset holds for days or dies immediately. That history often does half the tracing for us, and it is why customers mention clear explanations in their reviews: the diagnosis is a story we can walk you through, not a mystery fee.
Describe what it is doing through Request an Estimate or call us directly. You talk to the electrician doing the work, and for a fault that has a house half-dark, that is often the same day.
Common questions
How quickly can you come out?
Call and we will give you an honest answer for that day, not a window we cannot hold. For a circuit that is dead or acting dangerous, we can often be out the same day. Either way you will know before we hang up.
What if you cannot find the fault?
Intermittent faults sometimes refuse to appear on command. If that happens, we tell you exactly what we ruled out, what remains suspect, and what evidence to capture when it acts up again, so the next visit starts ahead instead of over.
Should I keep resetting a breaker that trips?
Reset it once with the big loads unplugged. If it trips again immediately, leave it off; each further reset pushes fault current into whatever is failing. The breaker guide explains how to read the trip pattern.
Do you repair what you find on the same visit?
Usually, yes. The truck carries the common devices, breakers, and materials, so a found fault is normally a fixed fault. Larger discoveries get discussed with you first, with the price, before any extra work starts.
Is it my equipment or the house wiring?
If the trouble follows one appliance from outlet to outlet, suspect the appliance. If one outlet or one room misbehaves no matter what is plugged in, suspect the circuit. Part of the visit is proving which, so you do not pay to fix the wrong one.

Denis at Priority Electric LLC delivered an outstanding experience from start to finish. We hired him to completely replace all the lighting in our kitchen, including updating the old fixtures and replacing all the recessed can lighting in the ceiling. What truly set Denis apart was his customer-focused approach. Before committing to the full ceiling job, he offered to install a complimentary can light as a test run. This allowed us to see the final look and brightness, which was incredibly helpful in making our final decision. The quality of the work was impeccable and fully met our expectations, and we found his pricing to be very fair for the scope of the project.
